Chikankari
The ancient craft of Chikankari is widely believed to be more than four centuries old, tracing its origins back to the Mughal era in the 16th century. Originating in Lucknow, India, the word 'Chikan' is derived from the Persian 'chikin' or 'chikeen,' meaning beautifully embroidered fabric. Inspired by Persian and Mughal art forms, Chikankari is characterised by intricate patterns and symmetrical designs, depicting motifs from nature, including flowers, leaves, and birds.
The craft has evolved from white stitching on white muslin fabric to include a wide variety of thread colours, fabrics, motifs, and patterns. Chikankari artisans undergo many years of training to master the techniques. Saaya's artisans are based in Lucknow, where each piece is handcrafted with love and precision using authentic Chikankari techniques. Using 32 different stitches, the delicate embroidery produces a fine, elegant result. It is often called shadow work because the stitches are sometimes done on the back side of the fabric.
The Chikankari process follows a 3-step procedure from start to finish:
-
Design
-
Engraving
-
Block printing
-
Embroidery
-
Washing and finishing
