SAAYA

Hello! I’m so pleased you’ve found my website. I’m Anshu Gupta, the founder of Saaya.

Origins

Born in Varanasi, India, a city steeped in heritage and culture, I grew up surrounded by a rich tradition of craftsmanship. Originally a dentist by trade, I discovered my talent for the arts after moving to the UK and taking a series of art classes with Kent-based artist Elizabeth Harbour. Encouraged to further explore my creative potential, I retrained at the prestigious KLC School of Design in London, where I developed my love of timeless, characterful design.

Saaya

Inspired by the heritage and artisans of my youth, I formed Saaya, a homeware brand dedicated to embracing India’s rich cultural heritage through beautiful, handmade furnishings. Meaning reflection or shadow, Saaya celebrates Chikankari, an ancient type of Indian embroidery that uses delicate shadow work to create intricate designs on fabric. An art that’s close to my heart, I am thrilled to bring Chikankari embroidery to a wider audience.

In addition, I am pleased to feature another ancient craft, Jamdani weaving, in my collection. Originating in Bangladesh, Jamdani textiles are traditionally woven on a handloom and combine an intricacy of design with muted or vibrant colours. Saaya’s range of embroidered Chikankari cushion covers, table linen and Jamdani lampshades are crafted from the finest fabrics and threads in soft, muted, organic tones.

In the future, I hope to introduce Jamdani weave in other products as well as hand-woven silk furnishings from Varanasi, my hometown.
